Recruitment by Alice

3rd November 1914

Today the recruitment sergeant came to Berkhamsted with big men in uniform and women cheering us all. My buddy and I joined the queue at the town hall. We marched in left, right, left right. We all signed up. We all had heard if we didn’t, we would have a white feather and no one would talk to us. When we got our shilling they told us it was going to be the best adventure yet. We got our shiny hats and uniforms. The big guns were heavy. I can’t believe we’re going to war. We got on a big train in our thousands.
