Bridgewater fielded two teams in the Dacorum Year 5/6 Tag Rugby festival that took place at Hemel Hempstead RFC on Wednesday 28th March.
The ‘Blues’ ran six tries past Gaddesdon Row, with Alex C. going over 4 times; William and Callum also got on the score board. There was a close match against St Cuthbert Mayne School, which they won 4 tries to 2 (William and Nicholas scored for us). Thomas Coram’s experienced Year 6s beat us 4 tries to one, with Alex J. scoring a consolation try. Another close match pitted us against Hoblett Manor Junior which we went down fighting in a real end to end battle. Bridgewater 2s bowed out of the competition and St Cuthbert Mayne progressed to the semi-finals.
The ‘Reds’ were drawn in a difficult Pool with South Hill 1sts, St Pauls 1sts and Chaulden Junior. They defeated the defending champions from South Hill with tries from Oscar, Thomas F. and Thomas R. We then beat Chaulden Hill before coming up against a very fast and well organised St Pauls team for a place in the semi-final. The Reds were a good match for them, but eventually squeezed out Bridgewater before going on to win the tournament trophy.
Bridgewater Reds also played a friendly fixture against Thomas Coram using seven tag turnover rules. Thomas Coram ran out winners 3 tries to 1 with Oscar Dale scoring our try.
A huge thank you to Mr Huhn and Mrs Evans for helping manage the Red team at the tournament, plus a number of parents who came down to support their children.
With 18 of the 20 players still in Year 5 and playing against teams with older players, Bridgewater is in a good place to mount a title challenge next year using the experience we have gained.
