Freddie’s Letter home from Ashridge Training Camp

Dear Mum and Dad,

We finally arrived with a lovely start of the sergeant shouting at us like a lion getting strangeled up a mountain, you could see all of the veins in his neck. We had to sleep in this bell tent wich held 6 people in it. We started with a drill which included marching, left turn, right turn, about turn and lots of stuff like that. After that we did rifle shooting. I axedently shot off target and the sergeant went nose to nose with me and shouted “YOU CAN NEVER TOUCH A RIFLE AGAIN!!!!” I had to do the cook house and had to peel a mountain of a million potatoes.

Cameron’s Letter from the Ashridge Training Camp

Dear Family,

I hate it here its swampy, gloomy and foggy. You have to wake up everyday at 5 am by a bugle and go to bed at 9pm. I wish I never came. I don’t care about the white feather. Freddie has been put in the cook house twice and Peter has been put in solitary confinement and hasen’t come out yet. The only thing I like is running around with a rifle filled with a bayonet.

The sergeant has a nose like a pig, ears like a elephant and a mouth like a snake. His words spit out of his mouth like a waterfall some rude and unecessery. Do you know what? I have to eat potatoes every day!

Every time I go outside another day has gone I don’t think I’ll be back for Christmas. Have you got a letter from Dad yet?

Evie’s War Diary

Dear Diary,

I finally convinced my friends to fight in the war. Ben, Jim and Sid haven’t been that keen but in the end they were a pushover. We walked into the town hall to cheers from the crowd. Many women were chanting “No white feather for you, Lads!” The recruitment sergeant was muttering to himself as he wrote my name down “No turning back now, son!” I got my uniform and was told to come back in four days. All of a sudden I wished I hadn’t done it. The next few days went by so quickly; all of a sudden it was time to leave! I nervously stepped onto the train and into the bustling crowd. This was all too much, let me out!

Amelia’s War Diary

I woke up with the sun shining brightly slashing onto my pillow. I knew something was wrong there was cheering and crowds outside my window. I ran to my curtains and pulled them open suddenly a huge union jack hit my window just inches from my face. I saw Ollie waving me down then I remembered every man must go to war and if we don’t we will be cowards and we will get a white feather.  I must go.  I got my money and I got dressed then I tore downstairs. Out I whent just in time to sign up with Ollie. “Attention!” roared a booming voice then the sun was blocked around me I turned around…. It was Colonel Kitten himself. I gasped. His moustache quivered then he handed me a shilling, a whole shilling from Colonel Kitten! “All Right, let’s see how you tow march left right left right.” We marched awey from the town hall and out of the village over the hills and out of sight.

Libby’s War Diary

10th October 1914

Dear Diary,

I’ve just come back from a football match and I’ve decided I’m going to war. We are lining up and some girls are giggling at me. I think they are the girls who were looking at me with disappointment on the way to the game. I was frightened they would give me a white feather to show my cowardlyness. I was so purswayded to go to the war because all the posters. Big bold writing and famous war hero’s urging you on. I was next in line I walked up to get my uniform. Behind me I heard this mighty cheer from the crowd. I felt this is me, this is my destiny.

Melody’s War Diary

10th October 1914

Dear Diary,

Today morning me, James, Charlie, Luke, Joe and Geogre went to the field and had a game of footy. Me, Charlie and Joe were the tops, James, Lee and Geogre were the skins. Suddenly Lee noticed a poster saying we need you to come and join the army. If you want to join sign in at the town hall, so we decided to join. It took a hour to get to the town hall. When we got there the crowd was enormous the were thousands and thousands of men joining. We waited for about ten minutes then it was are big moment we got on to the stage and the crowd went wild. Then we went home and explained it all to our parents. I feel proud and a bit nervous.

Fin M’s War Diary

14th October 1914

Dear Diary,

We can’t wait to go to war. I can’t belive we are going to get paid to shoot the Germans. I am going with my freinds Billy, Bob and Sean. Today we walked up to the stage and we singed up the whole crowd roared. I was so scared. One boy got the white feather no one will talk to him. I felt really bad for him he looks really sad his name is Josh. I don’t like looking at the “your country needs you” poster!

Harry’s War Diary

14th October 1914

Dear Diary,

Today is the most exciting day of my life, I’ll tell you why.

I was walking outside for a stroll in the park where I saw the most extraordinary thing. There was a huge parade with millions of soldiers, I think. I am twenty five and my chest is 36 inches wide. I don’t want a white feather, so I dash to the shops, buy an outfit and go back. By the time I get back it is still going on. I join in and I get payed a whole shilling, the crowd goes wild it is amazing!

Amelia’s Star Poems

Found on the teacher’s desk

Found on the teacher’s desk yesterday lunchtime. I think Pandora drew it!

Well, the true artist has revealed himself:

Maybe you’ve heard of the street artist Banksy.  In Mounts, step forward Lukesy, an artist who leaves unsigned drawings about the place.

Great picture Luke.

Star, Moon, Jupiter Revealed by Evie

Sun, Moon, Jupiter Revealed
Deep in the golden star’s satin sack,
Left for all to see,
The longing of a memory,
The sigh of the sea,
A drop of sun.

In the blue warmth of the moon’s woven purse,
Hidden from plain sight,
The shimmer of the fire gone rogue,
The dazzle of many, many diamonds,
The touch of a cloud.

In Jupiter’s case of dreams,
Able to blind the naked eye,
The venom of the night,
The beauty of a sunset,
The flare of a white light.

Star Up So High by Cameron

Star, star up so high do you in the night sky?
Tomorrow gone and then right back how do you do it just like that?
Are you real or is it me? So do you know how I feel?
Really, really are your true or is it a secret between me and you?

Hi up there is that you? I have some questions to ask.
Why are you up there? Where do you come from?
How do you shine like midnight glass? Can you see what I can see or are you less than me?
Can you talk?
Can you walk?
CAN YOU HEAR ME?

If you were to fall I’d save you from being stuck to the floor like glue.
Imagine how much fun we’d have playing frisbee and games like that.
But that will never happen and as it won’t, I talk to you.

A different approach from Lizzie….

I have to Write a Stupid Poem
I have to write a stupid poem about a stupid star
I’m not sure what they mean
Because all our teacher told us was blah blah blah
They said it didn’t have to rhyme
But I think that is a crime.

I have to write a stupid poem about a stupid star
I’m not sure if they mean the ones with cool cars
Or the ones in the sky, very very very high.

I guess I’ve written a poem about something else.
Maybe they will like it, maybe they won’t.
But at least I’ve done my homework.

Five Ways to Catch a Star by Louis

Catch it with amazing accuracy in a star net.
Simply let it drop into your hands.
Pick it out of the sky with a star picker.
Swim down to the bottom of the sea and grab it.
Climb up Mount Everest and reach for a star.

How to Make a Star by Abi

1. The brightest light you can think of.
2. The sharpest knife you can think of.
3. To fly it higher than the moon.
4. To get Henry VIII to cut it in half, like he did with two of his wives.
5. Then it is done.

What Stars are….. by Katy

A star leads you to the top of a Christmas tree.
A star guides you to victory.
A star is a dream.
A star is a volcano of gold.
Find a shooting star and never let it go.

Meadow’s Star poem

In the silver jar of dangerous sparkles you find

Sparks of wonder lying in the sky
Twinkles of glitter tracing to space
Amazing depth in the sea
Roaring thunder blazing to you.

Stars are blinding.

Stars by Maddie

Shimmering in the midnight sky
Towering the city,
All around us
Really high in space
Scanning the world from above.

Star by Xavi

Start by building a ladder and catch a star,
Take it far away to a castle,
Ask it what it is thinking,
Return it to its home.
